Almost every warehouse, distribution centre and production line in the country generates LDPE film, and a great deal of it still leaves site as general waste. Baled properly it is one of the more reliable plastics to move.

How LDPE film recycling works
LDPE is the flexible, tough, moisture-resistant polyethylene that dominates film applications: pallet wrap, shrink wrap, collation film, furniture and mattress bags, protective sheeting, some agricultural films. Because it is everywhere in packaging and logistics, the businesses that generate it usually generate a lot.
Recovered film is graded on how clean and how consistent it is. Natural or clear film is the most sought-after grade because it can go back into a wider range of products. Grades are described by their contamination ratio, 98/2 and 95/5 being the common ones, and mixed-colour film, known as jazz, is a separate grade with a separate market.
Contamination is what moves a load between grades. Dirt, moisture, heavy printing, sticky labels and other polymers all pull it down; PET, PVC and food waste in a film bale are the worst of it.
LDPE grades we take
- Natural / clear film The premium film grade, baled. Pallet wrap, shrink wrap, collation film, furniture and mattress bags. 98/2 · 95/5 · mill-size bales
- Production scrap Clean waste direct from film extrusion and packaging conversion. Edge trim · start-up waste (dollies) · non-conforming reels
- Jazz film Mixed-colour LDPE film, baled. A separate grade with its own market.
- Printed film Clear or light film carrying print. Graded on print coverage.
- Agricultural film Certain clean horticultural films and silage wrap, by arrangement. Usually needs washing.
Preparation and quality
Bale it dense and bale it consistently. Mill-size bales are what a reprocessor wants. Consistent bales of one grade are straightforward to place; a bale that changes halfway through is not.
Keep the grades apart. Natural and jazz are different materials commercially. Mixing them makes the whole bale jazz.
What ruins a load. Moisture, dirt, PET bottles, PVC, food residue, and tape or labels in quantity. Film picks up moisture in an open yard, so keep bales inside or covered.
