PET is the most recycled plastic in Britain and the one with the most demanding specification, because a good deal of it goes back into food-contact packaging. What that means in practice is that sorting matters more here than almost anywhere else.

How PET recycling works
PET is a polyester: strong, light, clear, and a good barrier against moisture and gas, which is why it dominates drinks bottles and a great deal of food packaging. It also appears as thermoformed trays and punnets, as film, and as strapping.
Bottle-grade PET is the premium stream. Clear and light blue bottles, well-sorted and baled, can go back into new bottles, and the specification reflects that. Coloured PET has a route but a different one, and mixed loads sit lower.
Trays and thermoforms are their own question. They are PET, but the additives and multi-layer constructions used in food packaging mean reprocessors treat them separately from bottles, so keeping them apart is worth doing even though both are PET.
PET grades we take
- Bottles Baled post-consumer beverage bottles. Sorted and free of other polymers. Clear · light blue · mixed colour
- Trays and thermoforms Food trays, punnets and clamshells, baled. Kept separate from bottles.
- Film Clean production scrap: edge trim and off-spec material. On reels or baled.
- Preforms and production waste Scrap preforms, runners and clean processing waste.
- Strapping Used PET strapping, baled.
Preparation and quality
Sort by colour, and keep bottles apart from trays. Clear and light blue is the grade with the widest route. Coloured PET mixed in changes what the bale is, and trays mixed with bottles change it again.
Other polymers are the problem. HDPE caps, PP labels, PVC sleeves and PLA all interfere with PET reprocessing. Caps and labels in ordinary quantities are expected; whole other-polymer items are not.
Bale it dry and bale it consistently. PET picks up moisture, and a bale that changes grade partway through is treated as its lowest content.
