Polypropylene comes off a production line in more forms than almost any other polymer, and the value in it depends almost entirely on how well it is kept apart. Segregated at source it is a straightforward material to place.

How polypropylene recycling works
PP is the workhorse thermoplastic: tough, chemically resistant, heat tolerant. In rigid form it becomes crates, trays, pots and tubs, automotive parts, housewares and industrial strapping. It carries resin code 5, though sorters identify it by infrared rather than by the symbol.
PP recycles well, and reprocessors will take it repeatedly. What decides where a load goes is polymer purity and colour consistency. A single-polymer, single-colour stream from one process is worth considerably more than a mixed load, because a compounder can use it without further sorting.
The most common problem is other polymers in the load. PE, PS and PET mixed into PP change what the material is, and once regrind is mixed it cannot be separated again.
Rigid PP grades we take
- Injection moulding scrap Off-spec parts, sprues, runners and start-up waste. Near-virgin quality when kept apart.
- Purgings and lump Purge from colour and material changes. Heavy, dense and straightforward to move.
- Thermoformed scrap Pots, tubs, trays and skeletal waste from forming lines.
- Crates, trays and returnables End-of-life crates, trays and handling equipment.
- Industrial strapping Clean PP strapping, baled.
- Regrind Single-polymer PP regrind, by arrangement, subject to specification.
Preparation and quality
Keep polymers apart. This is the single largest factor. PE, PS and PET in a PP load change the grade, and mixed regrind cannot be separated afterwards.
Keep colours apart where you can. Natural and single-colour streams are worth more than mixed. If your process runs colour changes, keeping the purge separate is usually worth the trouble.
What to keep out. Metal inserts, labels in quantity, food residue, and any part with a non-PP component moulded in. Tell us if parts carry inserts and we will tell you whether it matters.
