Paper is where the value in fibre is concentrated, and where it is most easily lost. A pallet of clean white printers' waste and the same weight of mixed office paper are not the same material, and they do not go to the same place.
Greenview buys recovered paper from businesses across the UK. Collected from your site, or delivered into our Garthorpe site just outside Melton Mowbray. Paper recycling: why grade separation matters more
Paper and board are graded under EN 643, and the paper grades sit across a much wider range than corrugated does. At one end is mixed paper, a blend of qualities. At the other are the white grades, which go to deinking mills to be made back into high-white paper and tissue.
What separates them is what the mill has to remove. Deinking mills want fibre that is white to begin with and free of anything that survives the process. Carbonless copy paper, laminates, wet-strength labels and heavy coatings all interfere, and a small proportion of the wrong material pulls an otherwise good load down into a lower grade.
The practical consequence is that paper rewards separation at source more than any other fibre. A load kept apart is a different grade from the same paper mixed together.
Paper grades we take
- Best white Unprinted white shavings, trim and offcuts from printers and converters. The highest paper grade.
- White letter Printed white paper, letterhead and business paper, free from unbleached fibre.
- Multigrade Mixed printers' and converters' waste across several white and light grades.
- Printers' overruns and misprints Brochures, catalogues, prospectuses and printed matter that never went out. Often clean and single-grade.
- SOW (sorted office waste) Office paper sorted free of card, files and general waste.
- Mixed papers A blend of paper and board grades, including light card and wrapping papers.
- Shredded paper Accepted by arrangement. Shred size affects what a mill can do with it, so tell us how it is shredded.
Preparation and quality
Keep grades apart. This is the single thing that most affects what a load is worth. White paper mixed into a general paper stream becomes a lower grade, and it cannot be separated again once it is baled.
What to keep out. Carbonless copy paper, laminated or plastic-coated sheets, wet-strength labels, heavy foil and glue-bound blocks. Staples and paper clips in ordinary quantities are fine. Envelope windows are usually tolerated but say so if there are a lot.
Dry and contained. Paper takes up moisture faster than board and loses grade when it does. Baled, boxed or on pallets is better than loose.
